Typical of April, it’s raining and it’s pouring. The old man may be snoring, but your Buick won’t be. Thanks to Rainsense wipers, available for installation in vehicles like the 2014 Buick Encore, your vehicle can detect the presence of rain or water on your windshield and start automatically. As you can imagine, the reaction time is much faster than the old man snoring and leaves you to keep your focus on the road ahead.
With Rainsense technology, a sensor is placed behind the rearview mirror. It uses infrared light beams to detect water and to immediately send a signal to the vehicle’s computer, initiating the wipers.
Rainsense wipers will even beat your reaction time to sudden water splashed on the windshield as the sensor gathers information every 40 milliseconds.
In addition to automatically starting to clear your windshield, the Rainsense wipers will also adjust according to the amount of rain and the speed of your vehicle.
“There is a multi-stage process and testing procedure that we must to go through with the Encore, for example, in order to integrate the Rainsense function,” said Matt Piazza, General Motors’ global design engineer for the technology. “Each vehicle is unique and there are a lot of factors like windshield pitch, rain intensity, vehicle speed, and light conditions, that all have to be accounted for and validated.”
