Hands-free cruising is coming to the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup. The system is also planned for the GMC Hummer EV that will be released toward the end of 2021.
While Super Cruise isn’t exactly auto-pilot, it does allow you to take your hands off the wheel and let the vehicle take over under certain conditions. Super Cruise uses a network of cameras and GPS sensors along the highway along with the vehicle’s adaptive cruise control system to control the vehicle. The system will work on more than 200,000 miles of divided highways in Canada and the United States and can take some of the stress off of drivers during commuting and while on long drives.
Super Cruise will shut off if you take your eyes off the road, however. A camera tracks your eye movements and the system will alert you to take control if it detects that you are not paying attention. Super Cruise also needs specific lane markings and can’t function on roads that aren’t part of the system. However, GM is hard at work to update the system with an even greater range of mapped roads.
