It’s no secret the SUV segment is burning hot amid lower gas prices, a recovering economy, and good old American love for large vehicles. GMC might be looking to get a larger piece of the pie and that means an expansion is in order. Although there’s no clear confirmation from the automaker, it looks like a new GMC SUV is in the works.
Word has it designers and engineers are currently drawing up plans for the new SUV using the GMC canyon pickup as a base. The body-on-frame platform could mean big things for the midsize SUV.
A new SUV isn’t exactly unexpected. In 2014, Duncan Aldred hinted that the brand could launch an off-road-oriented SUV to challenger the Jeep Wrangler. More recently, he stated that GMC could offer an “alternative to Jeep.” Don’t get your wallet out just yet though.
New GMC products won’t start rolling out to the public until around 2020 as a part of “Phase 2” of the brand’s growth strategy. “Phase 1” is currently ongoing and includes building the brand as a whole while simultaneously establishing the Denali tag to sub-brand status.
If anything, there’s still plenty more to come from GMC! Make sure to check back for more updates on the rumored new SUV.
